Look what came in the post

April 30, 2010

Today I had two parcels waiting for me. One of them was some yummy yarn, from Colourmart UK. It is cotton with silk in some rather pale purple color.  I was quite happy to receive it as it was the second package they send me in two weeks as the first one got lost somewhere on the way. But people in Colourmart were absolutely fantastic, as soon as I let them know that I have received the package they sent me the second one straight away.

I am planning to make a lovely crochet cardi with it, inspired by this Oscar de la Renta cardi. There is a CAL here.

The second package was Couture Sewing Techniques book by Claire B. Shaeffer.  I looked at it for some time, but ordered it only last week, after seeing Go Chanel or Go Home blog. It is Sew-along where lots of lovely ladies made a jacket based on couture techniques used in jackets made by Chanel house.  I am very happy that I found that blog, it has lots of information and photos of different project. I fell very inspired. Now I am on a hunt for some Chanel style fabric. I actually need a jacket to wear to a formal party in couple of weeks, but I wonder if I hae time to make anything.

Twinkle Next Big Thing Dress – finished

April 23, 2010

Lat week I finished the dress I blogged about here, and finally have time to blog about it.

I absolutely love it and cannot wait for summer to wear it.

I have made some modifications:

  • I didn’t use elastic band for the front and gathered fabric in the front and back instead.
  • I didn’t have enough fabric and just generally didn’t want to have such a full skirt, so used the smallest skirt piece (number 13) to cut out skirt and lining skirt.
  • I made bodice 3.5cm (1.5 inches) longer (pattern pieces 1, 2, 5, 6).
  • As I didn’t use the elastic for front, I used back waist casing pattern for both front and back waist; I also made the waist casing 6 cm long (plus seams).
  • I didn’t sew the main skirt and lining skirt together.
  • I didn’t like the way sleeves were sticking out, so I made the sleeves shorter. I measured 12 cm along the shoulder seam and connected this point with existing point in side seam, and cut off the excess.

If you think about making this dress, keep some things in mind:

- the dress make you look a little bit bigger than you are (I usually wear very fitted clothing, so it looked different for me);

- you need a strapless bra to wear underneath;

- sewing the dress requires advances skills or just a lot of patience; not only neckline required precision, but sewing side bodice part to center bodice part is rather tricky.

Snow !!!

April 1, 2010

I am in the French Alpes at the moment and just wanted to share some pics. This is the view from my window at the moment. It has been snowing for the last 3 days and it is great to have some new snow so late in the season. I am definitely going skiing tomorrow.  :)
